The Post and Beam

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: The Post and Beam

Proprietors: Mike and Laura Purswell

What do you get when you combine a Texan who loves to feed people and a Human Resources professional who is the consummate hostess? Meet Mike and Laura Purswell, proprietors of The Post and Beam, just thirty minutes up the road in Spring Hill. For more than twenty-five years, this couple with a gift for hospitality has been working toward a retirement goal of owning their own Bed & Breakfast. Enter Barbara Jenkins, who owns the property and was looking last year for a new way to utilize her historic farm. An introduction through a mutual friend gave the Purswells the opportunity of a ‘trial by fire’ – a chance to learn about the hospitality industry first-hand. They jumped right in and began by redecorating the farmhouse and restoring its grounds with a fresh eye; the feel is rustic, but charming, beautiful, but not fussy.

The Post and Beam is a marvelous venue for escaping the stress and strain of daily life and celebrating connections with family and friends. Mike and Laura believe hospitality is especially crucial these days and strive to create an environment where people know they are welcomed and pampered. The farmhouse was built in 1850; a century later, a hand-pegged post and beam addition gave the home its name. Ten-foot ceilings, carefully preserved walnut floors, original doors and mantels, and a host of other details add to the house’s simple dignity; moldings and antique chandeliers add new sparkle. A former working farm, the property’s hilltop setting offers sweeping views of rolling hills and the adjacent Civil War battlefield. History lingers here, mingling its own peculiar charm with the present.

The 800-square-foot Cathedral Room has an amazing hand pegged staircase that leads to a musician’s gallery. Guests can enjoy the sunset from a front porch rocker, or enjoy a summer breeze on the patio overlooking the Back Garden. The Post and Beam is the perfect spot for everything from weddings, private dinners and parties to alumni reunions, fundraisers, meetings and corporate events. Look at the beautiful pictures on their website and you’ll discover just how unique The Post and Beam is. Then call Mike and Laura to schedule a tour. Once you see this very special place, you’ll know you were meant to be there.

The Post & Beam is located at 3535 Kedron Road in Spring Hill, just off I 65 and Saturn Parkway.
