LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: Hachland Hill
Proprietor and Culinary Extraordinaire: Phila Hach
Do you find yourself wishing you had more time to enjoy your life? When was the last time you stopped to smell the roses? Meet Phila Hach, Southern culinary and hospitality extraordinaire, and proprietor of Hachland Hill, a family-run corporate retreat located in Joelton, TN. If you are planning an event, searching for a caterer, or simply in need of a weekend getaway, Phila’s 80+ years of expertise makes Hachland Hill the perfect choice.
Phila worked as a flight attendant for American Airlines while earning her degree, a job that presented her with the opportunity to acquire international culinary knowledge from inside the kitchens of world-renowned hotels. Phila went on to become the first woman to host a live televised cooking show in Tennessee, which aired five days a week, allowing her to continue to work for the airlines on the weekends. It was during one of these shows that Phila’s future husband, Adolf Hach, recognized the stewardess and wrote to ask her out. After the two were married, they spent a year-long honeymoon traveling the world. The couple then settled in Clarksville, TN, where they opened a bed and breakfast visited by celebrities from all over the world, including Duncan Hines, Henry Kissinger, and Oprah Winfrey.
The inspiring zest for life Phila must have had as a young stewardess is seen in the enthusiasm she displays every day, decades later. Much like life, Phila says that her cuisine should be enjoyed slowly.
Phila and her son, Joe, are now the proprietors of Hachland Hill, which includes three inns, a wedding chapel, and a conference center. Phila also caters over 30,000 meals each year for the military planes that fly from Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Through her 17 published cookbooks, including those for Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, and the many conferences she has spoken at, Phila’s culinary influence continues to enrich the cooking of chefs worldwide, perhaps even the one in your own kitchen.
